Be Wise in Using Social Media

FIDIA LUKITA

It cannot be denied that as time passes, the era becomes ever more advanced. We can find everything easily, such as searching for or obtaining information. Moreover, we have entered the digital era in which everything is connected to the internet. Just by sitting comfortably and holding a technological device such as a mobile phone or laptop, you can get information from all over the world. There are many challenges in entering the digital world, one of which is that you must be wise in using social media.

With social media, everyone can easily express themselves in public. Social media is media in the form of sites or applications that involve internet-based technology. Social media has positive and negative impacts, depending on you, whether you want to use social media well or not. As for the positive impacts of social media, you can obtain a great deal of useful information; not only obtaining it, you can also share positive and useful things with others, it makes it easier for us to interact with many people, and even social media makes it easier for us to gain broader insight, knowledge and learning.

Alongside these positive impacts there are certainly negative impacts, especially if we cannot use social media well, as it will then have a bad effect on us. The negative impacts of social media include distancing people who are already close to us, lowering social skills, and, if social media is used excessively, causing problems with self-control; social media will also have a negative impact if users do not follow social media ethics. Because of these negative impacts of social media, great caution is needed when using it.

Tips for being wise on social media: avoid sharing personal information to protect personal data and prevent misuse by irresponsible people. Avoid leaving bad comments about others; whether we realise it or not, the bad comments we give to others sometimes have a bad effect on ourselves too, and our name can be tarnished by just a short word we write on social media. It used to be said "your mouth is your tiger", but not anymore; nowadays, "your finger is your tiger". Be wise in sharing the activities you do on social media. Use social media for anything that is beneficial. Most importantly, also observe good ethics when using social media, because the state itself has set rules and limits for social media use in the ITE Law (Electronic Information and Transactions Law). The ITE Law also regulates various threats / penalties for crimes committed through the internet.

Stop spreading hoaxes or negative news and reacting further to news or information that reaches us; first make sure the information is true. Adjust your social media use to your needs or interests. So as not to become addicted to social media, set limits on your use of it. Maximise the benefits of using social media. Do not be easily deceived. Follow inspiring people and make them your motivation; by following inspiring people we will gain learning, insight and knowledge.

There are very many negative and positive impacts, benefits and tips for using social media that we can learn about, but it must be remembered once more that social media should not make you addicted and make you forget many other things. Remember to always be wise on social media. Using social media is everyone's right, but being wise on social media is the most important thing, because everything comes from ourselves; therefore manage yourself so that you do not lose out. Always remember to be wise when using social media. Do not let a small object in our hands make our future disorganised or aimless.
