Changes in the Merdeka Belajar Curriculum in Chemistry Learning and Their Effect on Student Development

NOER FITRI DEWI MUHSINI

In recent years, the education sector has witnessed significant changes towards more innovative, student-centred approaches to teaching and learning. One such initiative is the Merdeka Belajar Curriculum, which aims to revolutionise how subjects such as chemistry are taught in schools. This curriculum change has significant power over how learners learn and develop chemistry competencies. The Merdeka Belajar Curriculum enables students to be more active and creative in the learning process, and gives them the freedom to determine their own learning. As a result, this curriculum change can increase learners' motivation, skills and ability to develop deeper and broader chemistry knowledge and skills.

The implementation of the new Merdeka Belajar curriculum has brought transformation to chemistry education by introducing new teaching methods. One of the key aspects is the shift to an inquiry-based learning approach, in which students are encouraged to explore concepts through questions and experiments. This hands-on approach not only improves students' understanding of chemistry learning but also fosters their curiosity and critical thinking skills. In addition, it can help learners develop creativity and innovation in chemistry learning in several ways. First, this curriculum gives students the freedom to determine their learning, so that they can think creatively and innovate in applying chemistry concepts in everyday life. Second, this curriculum allows teachers to innovate in designing more interactive and practical learning activities, such as integrating case studies, collaborative projects, and everyday-life applications that help students understand how important chemistry is in daily life.

Therefore, in the Merdeka Belajar Curriculum, the role of the teacher in chemistry learning is very important for students' development. Chemistry teachers function as facilitators who can help students develop science process skills, such as observing, analysing, and describing everyday phenomena in line with scientific methods. Teachers must also be able to give advice and guidance that suit students' interests and talents, and understand the Pancasila Student Profile of the Merdeka curriculum in order to improve students' ability to develop a scientific character and the Pancasila Student Profile. In addition, chemistry teachers must be thoroughly prepared to face the Merdeka Curriculum, including being able to select various open resources, and understanding the concepts, characteristics and components of the Curriculum to be implemented in schools, as well as the assessment methods to be used in learning. In this way, chemistry teachers can help students acquire the ability to think critically, adapt, innovate and communicate, and improve the quality of students' learning outcomes.

Chemistry teachers can identify the differing learning needs of learners in chemistry learning in several ways:

  1. Observing Student Behaviour : Chemistry teachers can observe student behaviour in the classroom, such as how they interact with chemistry material, how they understand chemistry concepts, and how they solve chemistry problems. This can help chemistry teachers determine students' differing learning needs and develop more effective learning strategies.
  2. Interviewing Students : Chemistry teachers can interview students to find out more about their learning needs. Interviews can help chemistry teachers determine students' differing learning needs and develop more effective learning strategies.
  3. Surveys : Chemistry teachers can conduct surveys of students to find out their learning needs. Surveys can help chemistry teachers determine students' differing learning needs and develop more effective learning strategies.
  4. Discussing Interactive Learning Activities : Chemistry teachers can develop more interactive and practical learning activities, such as laboratory practicum, discussions, and projects, to increase students' participation and motivation in learning chemistry. This can help chemistry teachers determine students' differing learning needs and develop more effective learning strategies.
  5. Using Technology to Support Learning : Chemistry teachers can use technology to support learning, such as videos, images, and simulations, to improve the quality of learning and increase student motivation. This can help chemistry teachers determine students' differing learning needs and develop more effective learning strategies.
  6. Discussing Critical Thinking Skills : Chemistry teachers can develop students' critical thinking skills by giving tasks that require analysis and synthesis, and by asking questions that require deeper answers. This can help chemistry teachers determine students' differing learning needs and develop more effective learning strategies.
  7. Discussing Communication Skills : Chemistry teachers can develop students' communication skills by giving tasks that require presentation and discussion, and by asking questions that require clearer and more structured answers. This can help chemistry teachers determine students' differing learning needs and develop more effective learning strategies.
  8. Identifying Learning Styles : Chemistry teachers can identify students' differing learning styles, such as visual, auditory, or kinaesthetic, and develop learning strategies that suit those styles. This can help chemistry teachers determine students' differing learning needs and develop more effective learning strategies.
  9. Studying Adaptability : Chemistry teachers can develop students' adaptability by giving tasks that require various abilities, such as analysis, synthesis, and evaluation. This can help chemistry teachers determine students' differing learning needs and develop more effective learning strategies.
  10. Getting Used to Innovating : Chemistry teachers can develop students' ability to innovate by giving tasks that require various abilities, such as analysis, synthesis, and evaluation. This can help chemistry teachers determine students' differing learning needs and develop more effective learning strategies.

In this way, chemistry teachers can identify the differing learning needs of learners in chemistry learning and develop more effective learning strategies to improve the quality of students' learning outcomes.

The Merdeka Belajar Curriculum can also help students develop critical thinking skills and adaptability so that  various kinds of applied technology can be produced that can solve problems in the surrounding environment. In this way, students can develop the ability to apply chemistry knowledge to solving problems relevant to everyday life. In addition, this curriculum can also help students develop the ability to communicate clearly and in a structured way, and to have an open mind so that they can gain an understanding of other people when discussing. This can help students develop the ability to cooperate and think critically in a team.

An important aspect of assessing the impact of the Merdeka Belajar curriculum change on Chemistry learning is the evaluation of student performance. This evaluation involves not only assessing knowledge retention and its application but also analysing test scores and performance metrics to measure students' understanding of the subject. In addition, evaluating critical thinking skills and problem-solving ability is very important in determining the effectiveness of the new curriculum. By analysing how students approach and solve chemistry-related problems, educators can identify areas for improvement and adjust their teaching strategies to improve student learning outcomes.

The Merdeka Belajar Curriculum offers many opportunities to improve Chemistry education, but it also poses challenges in its implementation. One significant challenge is providing adequate teacher training and professional development to equip educators with the skills and knowledge needed to implement the new teaching methods effectively. In addition, ensuring the provision of resources and support for educators is essential in helping them adapt to the changes brought about by the new curriculum. Overcoming resistance to change among teachers and school administrators and fostering a culture of continuous improvement are essential in overcoming barriers to the successful implementation of curriculum change. By creating a supportive environment that encourages innovation and collaboration, schools can maximise the benefits of the new curriculum and improve Chemistry learning outcomes for students.
