Toxic Femininity: A Noose for Women

CHYNDI NADHEA PUSPARENI

Since long ago until now, women have been identified with being gentle, able to cook, wash, clean the house, and so on. The assumption has arisen that women do not need a higher education because in the end they will return to the kitchen, which makes most of society overlook the fact that emancipation has long been upheld in this country. Everything about women has been bound to the view that women must be feminine, gentle, and inclined to be obedient. This indirectly deprives women of the freedom of choice.

Career, education, attitude, and even the way of dressing are in fact our freedom to choose. But because of these ingrained standards, toxic things for women have arisen, commonly called toxic femininity. The existence of toxic femininity causes women to lose the opportunity to choose their own path in life. Not because they are less capable, but because they fear being judged by the people around them if the path they choose does not match the established standards. This results in the loss of self-confidence that every woman should have.

Therefore, it is important for women to understand toxic femininity so that together we can break these long-standing standards. Quoting Study Breaks, toxic femininity is a standard considered normal by society at large as something that women must have. The consequences of failing to meet this standard are judgement, distress, and even loss of self-confidence.
