What Will Happen in the Future If the Kurikulum Merdeka Continues to Be Implemented?

DINI CHANDRA PUTRI

On making the Merdeka Curriculum replace the 2013 curriculum, the
national curriculum for 2024 is still widely discussed by various parties. At the very least
it raises the question: can the Merdeka Curriculum be effective given the condition of
national education today? Of course, the Merdeka Curriculum itself is actually not
new, since it has been developed and trialled since 2020. It has
continued with various gradual evaluations since 2021. In fact, since March 2024
the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology has said that more than 300,000 education units across
Indonesia have started implementing the Merdeka Curriculum.
The hope is that implementing the Merdeka Curriculum can help create an
adaptive generation able to withstand the changing times on their
own strength. That is the wish of the Minister of Education, Culture, Research and
Technology (Mendikbud Ristek) Nadiem Anwar Makarim in tackling the
learning crisis in Indonesia. PGRI has also stated that implementing the Merdeka
Curriculum can bring major changes for teachers and students.
However, that is not all: the Merdeka Curriculum has also developed teacher competence
through the Merdeka Mengajar platform. Two programmes are running, namely:
Guru Penggerak (Driving Teachers) and Teacher Professional Education (PPG). It can be seen that implementing the Merdeka
Curriculum requires integral literacy learning covering ethical literacy,
informational literacy and functional literacy. It also emphasises the importance of an
approach and ecosystem empowerment in realising the literacy movement.
One of the benchmarks of the Merdeka Curriculum's success is being
able to actualise Pancasila values in the millennial generation, which needs a
more fitting method. The industrial era and the wave of technological disruption must be well understood by
today's young generation. Methods for grounding Pancasila as the state ideology have been
used for several decades. However, the problem now is more complex, because
information technology and social media have become so deeply entrenched in
people's lives.

Therefore, curriculum change is needed to make it easier and to encourage teachers
to carry out learning that better suits students' learning needs. It would be
better if the Merdeka Curriculum gave teachers more time to pay attention to
students' learning processes, apply formative assessment, adjust material and
teaching pace, and use deeper learning methods. And
with its flexible structure, the Merdeka Curriculum can be interpreted by schools with minimal
facilities in various regions of Indonesia.
