Education is one of the most important aspects of a nation's development. Through education, a person can acquire the knowledge and skills needed to face future challenges. However, many challenges remain in providing education in Indonesia, especially those related to the gap in access to education and in its equitable quality. To address this problem, the government has developed the concept of the Kurikulum Merdeka (Independent Curriculum), which aims to promote inclusive education.

The Kurikulum Merdeka is a curriculum concept developed by the Ministry of Education and Culture (Kemendikbud) as an alternative to the conventional curriculum currently used in Indonesia. According to Kemendikbud, the Kurikulum Merdeka is a curriculum that gives schools the freedom to design a curriculum that suits the needs and characteristics of their students. This aims to strengthen character education and students' creativity, and to improve the relevance of education to the needs of the world of work.

In the context of inclusive education, the Kurikulum Merdeka can be a solution to the gaps in access to and quality of education that still exist in Indonesia. Inclusive education is education that accommodates diversity and ensures that all students, including students with special needs, have equal opportunities to obtain quality education. Here are some ways the Kurikulum Merdeka can promote inclusive education:

1. Giving schools the freedom to adapt the curriculum to students' needs

The Kurikulum Merdeka gives schools the freedom to design a curriculum that suits the needs and characteristics of their students. This allows schools to adapt the curriculum to students' ability levels and interests, so that students can learn more effectively and efficiently. In addition, by paying attention to the needs of students with special needs, schools can design an inclusive curriculum and ensure that all students get equal opportunities to obtain quality education.

2. Encouraging active and collaborative learning

The Kurikulum Merdeka encourages active and collaborative learning. Active and collaborative learning can help students become more active in acquiring knowledge and skills, as well as develop their social and emotional abilities. In addition, by encouraging students to work together in groups, students can learn to respect differences and understand diversity.

3. Developing character education and students' creativity

The Kurikulum Merdeka aims to strengthen character education and students' creativity. By developing character education, students can learn to become responsible individuals with integrity who are able to work together in a team. In addition, by increasing their creativity, students can learn to think out-of-the-box and develop innovative solutions to problems.

4. Encouraging the use of technology in learning

The Kurikulum Merdeka also encourages the use of technology in learning. In today's digital era, the use of technology in learning can help students acquire knowledge and skills more effectively and efficiently. In addition, the use of technology can also help students overcome accessibility problems and ensure that all students get equal opportunities to obtain quality education.

5. Strengthening the role of teachers as learning facilitators

The Kurikulum Merdeka also strengthens the role of teachers as learning facilitators. Teachers are not merely deliverers of information, but also facilitators who help students acquire knowledge and skills in a more interactive and effective way. In addition, teachers can also help students overcome difficulties and provide motivation and support in the learning process.

In implementing the Kurikulum Merdeka in inclusive education, there are several challenges that need to be faced. First, teachers need adequate competence and skills in designing and implementing an inclusive curriculum that suits the needs of students with special needs. Second, support from the government and the community is needed to ensure that all students get equal opportunities to obtain quality education. Finally, support and collaboration among schools, parents, and the community are needed to ensure that inclusive education can be implemented effectively and sustainably.

To overcome these challenges, integrated and sustained efforts from various parties are needed. The government needs to provide adequate support and policies to encourage the implementation of the Kurikulum Merdeka and inclusive education. In addition, schools and teachers need to develop the competence and skills required to design and implement an inclusive curriculum that suits the needs of students with special needs. Parents and the community need to be actively involved in supporting and facilitating the learning process of students with special needs.

The Kurikulum Merdeka and inclusive education are interrelated concepts that can reinforce each other in promoting equitable and quality education for all students. By implementing the Kurikulum Merdeka in inclusive education, it is hoped that inclusive and equitable education can be created, helping to overcome the gaps in access to and quality of education that still exist in Indonesia.
