Seeking a Middle Way for the Rise of Fragile Mentality
Humans are created with a natural disposition (fitrah), namely to desire a happy, peaceful and prosperous life, both individually and in groups. In striving to realise these desires, mental health plays a very important role in the life of every individual. According to Law Number 18 of 2014 on Mental Health, mental health is a condition in which an individual can develop physically, mentally, spiritually and socially, so that they can realise their own abilities, cope with the pressures of work productively, and contribute to their community.
Nowadays, rumours about increasing mental instability have become an open secret discussed by people from all walks of life. Cases of lives being lost are often triggered by a person's inability to adjust to their surroundings, causing excessive pressure that makes them feel down and unable to bear the problems they face, which then ends with taking their own life, regarded merely as a way out to obtain inner peace. However, such an act is of course extremely fatal and is not justified in this life. A person must endure in this world until their life is taken by their own Creator.
Some signs of mental instability are prolonged stress and anxiety, which hinder activities and lower a person's physical well-being. So what is the middle way for people experiencing mental instability? A person whose mental state is unstable, such as feeling depressed, downcast or perhaps at their lowest point, should be accompanied by experts or special institutions that are experienced in the world of health, especially in the field of mental health. This is because, in truth, a person in an unstable mental condition badly needs a good listener who can offer solutions to the problems they face without judgement or assessment that worsens their mental health.
Quoting Nadin Hamizah, a singer and songwriter, all humans also need to be celebrated. By celebrated, she means that every human has the right to have their presence accepted, valued and even appreciated for all the results and achievements they have made. The celebration here does not always have to be with someone else. Humans can celebrate themselves, such as through self-reward or self-appreciation. Because through this, a person is seen as valuing the existence of their mental well-being, as well as giving themselves relief or rest after going through pressure.
Living the best version of one's own life is the dream of many people. However, there are always obstacles to living that best version, one of which is comparing one's life with the lives of others. Therefore, comparing your life with that of others whom you consider better is actually very unnatural. The comparison of one's life with another's life considered better than one's own was also voiced by the psychologist Jovita Maria Ferliana: "The measure of happiness that one person has and another has is certainly different and cannot be generalised, and of course the life each one has its own best standard."
You are the supreme ruler of the life you are living now. Know who you are and what makes you happy, and do the things you like consciously, without coercion from others. When you are able to maintain your mental stability, you will easily go through the challenges in this life. Stay alive to fight for all your dreams.
