The Need for Polite Language to Build a More Advanced Indonesia
Politeness is behaviour, conduct and speech that convey something positive to other people, whether orally or in writing. Language is the main tool of communication for conveying ideas to others. Politeness in language is the way of using language that conveys or draws on something positive in order to express an idea to another person.
Based on this definition, politeness can be seen from various sides of everyday life: politeness in language can be seen in the way a person speaks, politeness shows a person's behaviour or attitude that contains the value of politeness, and politeness applies in all situations. Therefore, politeness is greatly needed to nurture positive traits so that we can build good relationships with others and foster respect.
In everyday life, it is important for the speaker to understand politeness towards the listener so that what is said is easily understood and the listener is not offended by our words or ideas; if we use the wrong words or language, it will offend the listener. According to Sapir and Whorf, who stated that language determines a person's culture, this is true, because people who choose the right words and use polite words show that they are a person of good character.
Politeness in language is very important to practise in both formal and informal settings, because everything originates from speech. Speaking is not difficult as long as every person has a polite spirit towards the person they are talking to. For that reason, politeness in speech is a close relationship that both speaker and listener must have. It is not only speech that makes a person said to be polite; ethics is no less important. Ethics is the path that carries us safely through a life that grows harder to face with each passing day. Ethics in politeness will be born when it is prompted by gentle speech full of wisdom when facing all kinds of trials
Politeness in language can occur in any condition and situation, whether at home, at school, on campus, or in the surrounding environment. Politeness in language can occur between a child and parents, a pupil and teacher, a student and lecturer, and so on. Politeness in language arises for several reasons, namely a threatened or embarrassed face, and when we want to ask other people for help or assistance. Factors that influence politeness in language are age difference, level of education, social status, gender, economic level and so forth. In a formal condition or situation, a person is obliged to use polite language and courteous, good behaviour.
Indonesia has many languages and cultures, so every region has its own requirements and criteria for achieving politeness in language. Therefore, the level and criteria of politeness in language cannot be generalised. An attitude of tolerance is needed in every citizen so that a peaceful and harmonious environment can be created.
The reason for using polite language does not always come from within the speaker, but there are several factors that can give rise to politeness.
The first factor is unintentionality. The reason a person uses polite language arises unintentionally from that person. Usually a speaker who uses polite language unintentionally is someone who lives in an environment where polite language is customary, so that person ends up applying it unintentionally, as do people who use polite language in their daily lives. In this way, the person or speaker spontaneously uses polite language.
The second factor is habituation. The reason a speaker uses polite language is by getting used to behaving and speaking courteously. This occurs as a result of a person being raised by their parents from an early age to practise good manners. Parents who accustom their children to using polite language will have an influence that lasts until their children are adults.
Let us get into the habit of practising politeness in language in order to build a more advanced Indonesia.
