Does Eating Papaya Really Help Digestion?

RABIATUL ADAWIYAH

Papaya or Carica papaya  is a tropical fruit that is very healthy and beneficial. Besides being easy to find and affordable, this fruit contains many vitamins, including calcium, magnesium, vitamins B1, B3, B5, E, K and antioxidants. Papaya is rich in antioxidants that can reduce inflammation, fight disease and help one look younger for longer and papaya is known to be good for helping to ease digestion. This is because the fruit is high in fibre and contains the enzyme papain, which makes protein easier to digest.

In addition, research has revealed that regularly eating papaya is known to relieve constipation and bloating. Papaya is highly recommended for people suffering from constipation (difficulty passing stool). This is because the high fibre content in papaya also helps digest food in the intestines. When the stomach feels full it can stimulate peristaltic movement of the intestines; if you feel the urge, go to the toilet immediately so that constipation does not occur.

Constipation or when passing stool becomes difficult so that waste accumulates in the large intestine is a common health disorder. This condition is often experienced by adults and children alike. Common causes of constipation include dehydration, lack of dietary fibre, vitamin deficiency, hormonal changes, illness and medication side effects. The bad news is that this condition can cause more serious problems if not treated promptly. Some serious complications that may occur because of constipation are intestinal obstruction, inflammation of the large intestine, reduced nutrient absorption, haemorrhoids, and even hernia.

On the other hand, papaya also contains fibre and water. Both are useful in preventing constipation and maintaining the digestive cycle by smoothing bowel movement. This is also why papaya is often used for the health of the digestive tract. Another benefit of papaya lies in its very low calorie content. This is good for you who want to lose weight. One papaya weighing 140 grams provides only 0.4 grams of fat, zero cholesterol, 15.7 grams of carbohydrate, and 2.5 grams of fibre.

There are several benefits of papaya if you eat it, among them, first, Smoothing digestion. This fruit contains the enzyme papain, which is highest when the fruit is ripe. The enzyme can help digest the protein that enters the body. In addition, this fruit is a good source of fermentation substances for health.

Second, killing parasites in the intestines. It turns out that it is not only the flesh that provides benefits. The seeds of the papaya fruit are also useful for killing intestinal worms and amoeba parasites in the body. The carpaine content in papaya can help remove parasites in the digestive tract.

Third, healing wounds in the stomach lining. Related to the digestive system, it can heal wounds that occur in the stomach lining and other parts of the digestive system. The content of the fruit can help the body protect the digestive system. Therefore, this fruit is suitable for someone suffering from stomach ulcers (maag).
