During this pandemic, learning is carried out online (daring, "in the network") in order to prevent and avoid the spread of the Covid-19 virus. Online learning can also be described as distance education, which has become a fairly effective method used during the current pandemic.
This online teaching and learning system is carried out without direct face-to-face contact between teachers and learners, but online using the internet network. For that reason, the development of education during the Covid-19 pandemic has become very important for raising the standard of education, especially in Indonesia. The role of technology in supporting the development of education today is certainly also very important in supporting the online learning process.
We know that daily life cannot be separated from the use of the internet. Even the various devices we use can now be connected to the internet. This refers to the term Internet of Things (IoT), namely billions of physical devices around the world that are now connected to the internet, all of which collect and share data.
IoT is a concept that aims to expand the use of internet connectivity. IoT can be used to ease burdens, shorten time, and make human activities easier. To support an IoT system, facilities equipped with sensors suited to their purpose are needed so that they can be monitored and controlled over the internet.
The use and development of technology over time has had a great influence on the world of education. The use of the internet in school systems, also called e-learning, is a result of the digital revolution in technology. Teaching and learning activities that use an IoT system will provide a more efficient and immersive educational experience. In general, IoT is used more effectively in secondary school and university environments, where learners can move from paper textbooks to e-books.
In the field of education, the application of IoT aims to improve the efficiency and quality of education in an institution. In this regard, there are several applications of IoT in education, including:
First, a student attendance system, which is a system useful for recording learners' attendance in learning. The process of recording attendance has so far still been done manually, which is prone to data loss and input errors. With the IoT era, the student attendance process will be much easier; students only need to fill in an electronic attendance record through their digital devices such as a smartphone or laptop while the learning process is under way. The data is then stored on a server and presented in the form of a Web application or mobile application. So the data can be accessed by learners and the institution in real time.
Second, borrowing of learning books. In general, the book borrowing process is intended to make transactions and book stock recording easier and smoother. By using IoT, learners can borrow books from their own homes and then collect them when they are on school grounds. This makes it possible to analyse learners' reading interest through book borrowing statistics using the IoT system.
Third, E-Learning as a learning system. An e-learning system is a system in the teaching and learning process that makes use of information technology and internet connectivity. E-learning is designed to make it easier to access and understand a material or topic being taught. The advantages of this e-learning system are a flexible learning schedule, a learning rhythm that suits the learner, better understanding of the material by learners, savings in time and effort, and the ability to learn from the best teachers in their fields.
And fourth, the interactive whiteboard, which is a digital whiteboard that works through a computer system and can save what has been written on it. This interactive whiteboard is mostly used as a medium for presenting lessons or materials. This interactive board has a feature capable of recording the presenter and also the material delivered during the presentation. Consequently, learners can deepen their understanding of the material by re-watching the recording of the presentation.
From all the statements above, during this Covid 19 pandemic the Internet of Things (IoT) can be useful as a support for digital transformation in education, where many IoT innovations have been developed, such as attendance recording systems, borrowing of learning books, e-learning systems, and interactive whiteboards. All of these developments can be used as more effective learning media, not tied to time and saving more effort, especially suitable for use during the Covid 19 pandemic occurring in Indonesia at present.
We have understood that education is a very important matter for Indonesian society and every person in Indonesia has the right to receive education. Therefore, even though we are still in a pandemic, learning and education must still be carried out. To keep carrying out learning, it is done online (daring), applying the Internet of Things (IoT) system as a means of learning. This is done because educational technology greatly influences the continuity of learning and reflects the quality of education in a country.
