On Tuesday, 2 April 2019, the Chemistry Education Study Programme held a public lecture on “The Application of STEM-Based Education (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) in Facing the Industrial Revolution 4.0 Era”. The public lecture was given by two outstanding speakers, namely Dr. Pujianto, S.Pd., M.Pd. and Dr. Antuni Wiyarsi, S.Pd.si., M.Sc. from Yogyakarta State University, with Mr. Muhammad Zamhari, M.Sc as moderator.
The public lecture was attended by Chemistry Education students from the 2016 cohort to the 2018 cohort and several lecturers of the Chemistry Education study programme. Enthusiasm was evident among the participants, as seen in the students’ eagerness in responding to the public lecture during the question-and-answer session. The public lecture also included a doorprize session, which certainly made the event livelier.
The public lecture discussed STEM. STEM is an acronym of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, which is:
- An approach to solving a problem by using the perspectives of various related or appropriate scientific disciplines in an integrated way.
- A curriculum driven by problem solving, exploratory learning, and active learning to find solutions.
- A meta-discipline that transforms subject matter by combining technology and engineering.
STEM aims to prepare students to survive in life, regardless of the profession they choose to pursue, and to teach students how to think critically and how to solve problems, which are skills that can be used throughout life. In addition, strengthening STEM programmes can create individuals who are able to provide new solutions and better decisions; this strengthening is not enough if it only improves science and mathematics skills, but must also improve experiences centred on design, innovation, engineering, and technology that enhance inventiveness and creativity, ingenuity, and imagination.
In applying the STEM system in education, we must of course be able to understand and master the skills of STEM itself, among them Analytical Skills, Science Skills, Mathematics Skills, and Attention to Detail.
STEM can be applied in the field of education by,
- Integrating science, technology, engineering, and math in one learning experience.
- Using project-based learning.
- Emphasising real-world applications.
- Preparing students to determine their careers.
- Developing soft and technical skills.
