The STEM Approach in the Industrial Revolution 4.0 Era
The Chemistry Education Study Programme of Universitas Islam Negeri Yogyakarta once again held a public lecture entitled “The Application of STEM-Based Research ( Science , Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics ) in Facing the 4.0 Revolution Era”. The public lecture featured two speakers and a moderator. The two speakers were Dr. Pujianto, S.Pd., M.Pd., a Physics Education lecturer at UNY, and Dr. Antuni Wiyarsi, S.Pd.Si, M.Sc., a Chemistry Education lecturer at UNY. The moderator was M. Zamhari, a Chemistry Education lecturer at UIN Sunan Kalijaga. The activity, attended by all students of the Chemistry Education study programme, was held on Tuesday (02/04) in the Theatrical Room of FST UIN Sunan Kalijaga.
On this occasion Dr. Pujianto spoke about the implementation of STEM in educational research. He said that many students do not receive adequate STEM education, STEM focuses only on vocational schools, and STEM material is not taught every day in many schools. 29% of teachers teach science only about 2 days a week.
“In Indonesia, STEM is not studied as a whole; at most it is science and mathematics, which do not cover everything,” said Dr. Pujianto.
Meanwhile, Dr. Antuni spoke about Techniques for Developing STEM-Based Research Instruments. She explained that the paradigm shift in Chemistry Education 4.0 from CTE (Chemistry through Education) to ETC (Education through Chemistry) creates a demand to integrate STEM into research instruments.
Several questions were raised by the students present, among them about making assessment rubrics, how to apply STEM, and so on. The public lecture ended with the presentation of appreciation plaques from the Head of the Chemistry Education Study Programme to the speakers and the moderator, and, not to be forgotten, a doorprize session for the Pkim students.
