Healthy Mental Health, Secure Future

DONA PUSPITA

Adolescence is a phase of mental health crisis. Mental health is no longer unfamiliar to teenagers of the millennial generation. This age is vulnerable to mental health problems. Mental health is often neglected because of its invisible nature; sometimes it goes unnoticed by those who suffer from it and by the people around them. In general, teenagers lack understanding of mental health.

Teenagers' awareness of the importance of knowledge about mental health is still minimal, amid the high percentage of people experiencing mental health disorders. Mental health is important because it affects how a person thinks, feels and acts when facing life's problems, and it influences how a person copes with stress. Considering how important mental health is, here are some ways to maintain it.

In maintaining mental health there are several things that should be done, one of which is trying new things; trying new things is not easy, because not everyone is ready and brave enough to step out of their comfort zone. There is nothing wrong with living a routine as usual. However, living the same way for years results in lost opportunities to develop and makes it hard to see the potential within oneself.

Not only that, talking with other people, or what we usually call "curhat" (confiding), can also be done to lighten the burden one is carrying. It is usually done by sharing the problem or asking for an opinion about what one is experiencing. Close friends or family are often the choice for confiding.

As now, many new students of the class of 2022 experience stress, whether from the many assignments or the difficulty of communicating, and sometimes family problems are also a contributing factor. In the case of a Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) student who died by suicide in a hotel in Yogyakarta, Brigitta Erlita Tri Anggadewi, a psychologist at Universitas Sanata Darma (USD), said that a suicide is not caused by just one factor; there is usually a mental problem or psychological disorder beforehand. Family, close friends or a girlfriend/boyfriend can also be factors that lead a person to decide to end their life.

So maintaining mental health can be done by always thinking positively, eating nutritious food, exercising regularly, getting enough rest, and consulting a psychologist or expert, and never hesitating to consult however small the problem one feels and faces.
