UIN Suka Chemistry Education Holds a Stadium General on Developing HOTS Questions to Face the Industry 4.0 Disruption Era
The Chemistry Education Study Programme of UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta once again held a stadium general lecture to add new insights developed in line with the needs and developments of the times, titled Developing High Order Thinking Skill (HOTS) Questions for Prospective Chemistry Education Teachers in Facing the Era of Industry 4.0 Disruption, on Thursday (26/09/19) at the Theatre of the Faculty of Science and Technology. The stadium general featured an expert speaker, Rr. Lis Permana Sari, M.Si., a lecturer at Yogyakarta State University. The event was attended by the Head of the Study Programme, several Chemistry Education teaching staff, and Chemistry Education students of the 2017, 2018, and 2019 cohorts.
The event was opened by Karmanto, S.Si., M.Sc., Head of the Chemistry Education Study Programme. In his remarks he quoted the Qur’an, Surah al-Mulk: 2, that Allah tests which of us is best in deeds; that righteous deeds are part of faith; and that among the signs of the believers are those who attend gatherings of knowledge. He said that high order thinking skill is generally regarded as better because it involves the ability to think in finding problems and solving problems, and that the problem-solving process involves thinking processes of analysing, evaluating, and creating.
This was followed by the lecture material from Rr. Lis Permana Sari, M.Si., moderated by Khairunnisa, S.Pd. She explained that HOTS is a category within the concept of levels of thinking ability when studying a topic, based on Bloom’s Taxonomy. In Bloom’s Taxonomy, thinking ability is divided into several levels: remembering, understanding, applying, analysing, evaluating, and creating. On the other hand, the category of higher order thinking skills (HOTS) refers to abilities that go beyond remembering, understanding, and applying a concept; they require the ability to analyse or evaluate the available information and possibly to create something from that information. Ms. Rr. Lis Permana Sari, M.Si. also reminded the audience that when HOTS-based questions are applied, the material given must also be HOTS-based, and that mastery of basic chemistry is very important for prospective chemistry teachers. An interactive dialogue followed with the students who asked questions at that time.
